OK, that is true.  I love that analogy by the way!  :P  I still think, however, that is possible for an individual to be "on guard" in trapping ANY AND EVERY thought, true or not, and subjecting it to the most detailed scrutiny before it becomes "understanding" or even belief.  Anyways, OP:

How do we recognize and avoid automatically believing a thought-image is real BEFORE we experience the effects of reacting to it ?
