Any psychologists who believe IQ isn't genetic in origin?
« on: May 29, 2010, 06:12:48 PM »
It seems that all of the psychologists I have read seem to believe IQ is about 70% or so genetic in origin. Outside of psychology, this position is viewed as offensive, racist, politically incorrect, etc. But it seems that within psychology it is a very widely-held position. Are there any psychologists who believe IQ is NOT mostly genetic in origin? References would be most appreciated.

It's part genetic, part environment. If you live in a hot area like Africa or South America, well let's just say their focus is not on technologies.

Interesting question?
As a teacher one sees the importance of the reasoning process and that it needs to be taught.
In part i suspect IQ tests are strongly related to reasoning .
teach proper reasoning and IQ scores should go up ?

i believe that IQ is about problem solving. most IQ tests basically measures your problem solving ability so i agree with Horton that they are strongly related to reasoning/logic.

Thank you.
Yes, the reasoning process is a classical idea in education .
People strongly resist the reasoning process in life and we see it best at the level of state and country where consequences are ignored .

I do think that reasoning can be taught to almost anybody.
When you look at the various fields of study they are all about problem solving more than factual knowledge?

Problem solving is another way of putting it but then it doesn't sound as good as intelligence.
We master maths because we can follow a sequence of problem solving steps and this is as it is in so many other areas of study, then we connect the dots and draw a conclusion.

This is like a universal framework which we can apply to other seemingly unrelated tasks.
In part asking good questions and knowing what is relevant is intelligence?

So it is possible that a person in African bush could have these skills and intelligence, but could we measure it on our conventional scale?
Maybe not .

it's very disappointing this. Once going back to your family u become sick.

But in Africa they have another kind of intelligence, they do not work so much with the nerves; they're much calmer. AND they don't fight that much as Germans or Dutch.

If personality was formed on genetics wouldn't siblins be more or less of the same IQ level.
IQ test do not take into consideration many skills and for that reason I don't rate them at all.

For example say:
I have a car and the break pads need changing, only I haven't enough money to pay the garage so I buy the part and read up on how to do it myself. And I do it successfully. Job done.
Now my friend had a car and her break pads need changing, only she hasn't got enough money to pay the garage so she manipulates a guy she knows by hinting towards his reward if he does her a favour and she gets her break pads changed successfully. Job done.
Two very different ways to solving the same problem. Who's got the highest IQ?
