Best Theory
« on: May 30, 2008, 03:28:39 AM »
When I studied Psychology I was quite disgusted with many of the theories proposed throughout the ages concerning our brain and Psychology. However, behavioral Psychology always seemed to be backed up logic and has a proven track record. B.F Skinner and others in his field produced legitimate results that backed up behaviorism as a theory. Reinforcements make sense, Freud's nonsense does not.

this is true, freuds theory was drawn from his own thoughts about his subjects. this makes it so difficult if not impossible to gather evidence more so when we try to test theories of unconscious and subconscious. pavlov and skinner where objective and empirical in their quest for understanding resulting in a scientifically valid and replicable model of human behaviour.
The so-called miraculous powers of a great master are a natural accompaniment to his exact understanding of subtle laws that operate in the inner cosmos of consciousness.

I agree...Freuds theory really do not make sense to me at all...the idea of Hysteric Women, the Penis Envy.... it's just his own ideas really...=/

Behavioral psychology is one of the major topics taught in every introductory psychology course, yet many concepts that lie at the heart of this subject can be confusing for students. If you’ve ever found yourself confusing the unconditioned stimulus with the conditioned stimulus, this basic tutorial is for you.Behavioral Psychology is basically interested in how our behavior results from the stimuli both in the environment and within ourselves. They study, often in minute detail, the behaviors we exhibit while controlling for as many other variables as possible. Often a grueling process, but results have helped us learn a great deal about our behaviors, the effect our environment has on us, how we learn new behaviors, and what motivates us to change or remain the same.

But dont forget....Freud's theory has given us a big contribution to theory of personality. And i think Freud's concept of Id, Ego and superego is make sense.

if i had to pick one, id pick jungs theories. but i think its best to look human mind from bit broader point of view and not just concentrate on one theory, since one thery will only cover quite little of whole mind.

this makes it so difficult if not impossible to gather evidence more so when we try to test theories of unconscious and subconscious.

there is alot of evidence about unconscious mind. it has been shown with fmri that subliminal perception happens when stimuli is so short that brain area activates(visual cortex for example), but it doesent communicate the message to other regions. implicit memories are pretty much concidered as fact today etc etc. unconscious being as freud said it is has no evidence tho, but thats no surprice since its bit ridiculous in most parts. jungian (personal)unconscious makes much more sense and i think he was the first person who found some evidence of the unconscious with his tests on skin conduction(which led to invention of lie detector). basically he noticed that there is an reaction of autonomical system to words that have an meaning to unconscious mind, but has been repressed from consciousnes mind.

but again to freud. he did make a good job on finding the "royal road to the unconscious" from dreams. i think jungian psychological types explain personality much better than freuds id, ego, superego. but freud did a good job on defence mechanisms, free association etc. and wasnt he the one who came up with transference and countertransference? his drive theory isnt nearly as good as jungs archetype theory.
