My friend told me that studying psychology makes him depressed because he can relate to a lot of them.

For me, I'm personally finding a similar experience. Learning abnormal psychology and such I'm starting to associate with a lot of the stuff in it. In a way, this makes me reflect too much on my own life, and this inner focus somehow is turning out to be depressing...

Does anyone know what I am talking about or can relate?

This is very common for psychology students. It's somewhat an artifact of the nature of psychology, particularly abnormal psychology, namely that it's quite broad from an untrained point of view. It's absolutely vital to always keep in mind that no diagnosis should be made without extensive observation based on expertise that an aspiring psychology student doesn't yet possess, and that attempting to self-diagnose is always an exercise in futility regardless of training or amount of study.

This should really have been covered in class. It's so standard that I'm sure it's covered in every Psych 101 (or equivalent) class.

I can sort of relate...when I took Abnormal Psychology I found myself "relating" to a LOT of the disorders, and even some of the Psychosis like symptoms of Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder (even though I have neither of these!). I think this is quite common, especially for psychology students. We are naturally curious about the human mind and can therefore more easily (in my opinion) "self-diagnose". Chances are, you do not have all the disorders you think you have, including depression, but are instead just finding a lot of things in common with certain disorders or dysfunctions. Once you get out of the Abnormal Psychology course and start exposing yourself to other psychology courses, you will likely see this for yourself. Good luck :)

Studying psychology is a enlightenment to me. I studied abnormal psychology and had every symptom they had. Without proper understanding of how to study abnormal anything is not to assume you have this ilness. Go Voodo. pljames
