Drugs that alter emotion and thinking....
« on: July 21, 2010, 04:02:13 AM »
Hello everyone,

Just the other day, I was reading about a drug that can increase a woman's sex drive. So I was just wondering, in the future, will psychological drugs be able to change a person's feelings, emotions, and such? I know that they make anti-depressants and such nowadays. But I was just wondering, what about, in say 20 years from now? Will they make drugs that can, for example, abolish sadness? Suppose if someone you love dies, will their be drugs that can take away this sadness? And will a drug artificially be able to make someone happy?

Do you know if this is a real possibility, that eventually pharmaceutical companies will make drugs that will, essentially, let people 'chose' their feelings and emotions? I was just reading 'Brave New World' and so got interested in the subject.

I was searching on Google for this information, but I could not find any good information on the subject. I was just wondering if you know of any books or article on the subject. If you do, please tell.

Thank you so much,

My wife is a health food/yoga nut , worked in mental health.
We eat carefully but i do notice shitt food effects your energy.
On this most basic level we must see the relationship with what we eat.

We can't chose to feel somethings no matter what drug we do.
I tried an failed.
Happiness is not drug induced , deeper causations,..........
We can kid ourselves with some drugs but ever increasingly life becomes impersonal and less focussed.

For the system it is a dream to have pliable masses.

LSD, psilocybin, MDMA, marijuana, alcohol, opiates, benzos...we have those kind of drugs already.
That which can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.

Population on drugs anyway?

Sociopaths fueled by something else.
Read-politicians and guardians of society.
Laughs, wish it were not so!

that is a good point. However, these have big side affects, and only last for a short while.

I was jst wondering about drugs that have long effect, and VERY little side effects. It will be possible in the future, no?

One day, it may be possible to create 'true happiness' through drugs, no?

A weird concept.

That is a good point.

However, I was just thinking, you know how some people are more happy than another, even when both people have same everything? Thus, happiness must do a great deal with genetics and neurotransmitters.

Theoretically, then, drugs can be made that change these neurotransmitters, and so make a otherwise sad person happy, like a happy person. Don't you agree?

happiness is as much to do with the content of the persons mind, ie thoughts, as it is to do with neurotransmitters.
as such we can change a persons emotions by changing the content of the mind without the use of drugs.

although a pill would be a lot less resource intensive to administer.

The so-called miraculous powers of a great master are a natural accompaniment to his exact understanding of subtle laws that operate in the inner cosmos of consciousness.

Drugs are not necessary.  They only enhance chemical transactions that already happen within the brain. They quicken or slow down their reactions. those reactions are already present with the drug being absent.

"The Healing Journey"-Claudio Naranjo
Alex (Sasha)  Shulgin- considered the father of synthetic drugs.
Alexander "Sasha" Shulgin, Ph.D., is a pharmacologist and chemist known for his creation of new psychoactive chemicals.

A tricky question?
If we can take drugs to become happy...........doesn't that then defeat the purpose of our journey through life?

"happiness is as much to do with the content of the persons mind, ie thoughts,.."
Exactly!

We can argue from the point of view that happiness is a consequence of the content of our thoughts and our journey and what we do with it?

Materialism,self-esteem, core beliefs, ethics and morality all have a part to play in our happiness.

Ahhh Shasha Shulgin...the man is a genius.  I don't take drugs to become happy (some people do, and it's a form of bad faith, in Sartre's sense).  I take drugs to explore myself and examine my psyche from a new perspective (and because they're fun).  When used properly and responsibly, drugs do not defeat the purpose of our journey through life; they are part of the journey through life.
That which can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.

Enigma,
"Ahhh Shasha Shulgin...the man is a genius."

The supreme creative mind?

As you say drugs can be part of the journey but some would like to cheat their way through journey.
Human beings being what they are.
