Help in naming phenomena
« on: August 06, 2011, 12:09:20 PM »
Hi all
Please tell me what is the name of the phenomena where people are given a small amount of information and then they rely on others to fill in what they do not know and they then believe that 'concocted' notion to be true?

If there are Psychologists whose experiments are pertinent, then their names would be helpful too.

Thanks in anticipation.

I think the term that you are looking for is "religion," though I could be wrong.  :(

No, not religion.   Thanks.   I might be accidentally running two notions together.

I wonder if this should be on a Perception orientated thread instead?

I think it is probably general psychology topic.

is the phenomena you are thinking of "confabulation"
The so-called miraculous powers of a great master are a natural accompaniment to his exact understanding of subtle laws that operate in the inner cosmos of consciousness.

Thanks SWM

My little dictionary tells me that confabulation works on both the conscious and the unconscious states.  Filling in the gaps in memory with false notions.

Perhaps I am running two phenomena together accidentally, because it says nothing about the person believing  in the concocted notions.

Any further help and pointers towards research undertaken, is most welcome.

are you thinking about confirmation bias?
