How would you explain this mental state?
« on: December 15, 2010, 04:57:15 AM »
I sometimes find myself in a certain mental state in social situations. It's a state of complete comfort and calm. Everything also moves and feel somewhat surreal; dreamy. I'm always living in the moment while in this state; not focused on the future or worried, which I'm sure helps. It's like 'being in the zone', except during social situations.

Oddly enough, I tend to enter this mental state during social situations that I would normally feel a bit uncomfortable in, such as parties.

Any help clarifying this feeling, and advice on how to achieve this state would be greatly appreciated! ;)

You can be in the zone during any activity, not just sports. I've had days where I was in the zone while doing my laundry or dishes over the years, but generally, you 'get in the zone' when engaged in activities you excel at and feel fully comfortable with your perceived skills relative to the perceived difficulties of the goal.

There are no good theories of being in the zone. The phenomena is most directly relevant to sports psychology, so that's where I'd go for contemporary studies. Csikszentmihalyi's theory of flow, though I'm only familiar with it on a surface level, is probably the most wholesome theory, but today large parts of it are outdated and almost none of it is experimentally substantiated, to my knowledge.
