learning and surprise

The main requirement of the learning process is the surprise

element, where with it the person involved can detects the

association between CS (conditioned stimulus) and UCS

(unconditioned stimulus). But, according to Lieberman, the

learning process can take place without awareness (i.e.: the

impulse of buying some products as a result of exposure to

advertisements). How can this phenomena happens?
