Nature or Nurture(not the debate)
« on: February 01, 2012, 06:57:30 PM »
I would just like to know: Is it in our genes to care about what others think?? Is it inherent in us to look for aproval the way we do?? Like people that buy nice things to show off, act a certain fake way to look cool or whatever, or pursue a certain education for social status purposes.

Or would you say these are more socially learned behaviours and that we're conditioned into being like this??

I'm asking this because I feel like the secret to true happiness is to simple not care what others think. However, I'm not sure if stopping to care is even possible.

Thanks in advance.

no caring is a combination of feeling and thinking. genes influence the biological structure. however your parents are likely to influence your emotional and thinking processes. so it may seem to you that you were born this way.

this is not biological but social conditioning.

this might be the secret to your happiness at this moment. stopping caring is possible. it is a process of being able to identify the beliefs and values that give rise to the thoughts and emotions of need approval from people.

The so-called miraculous powers of a great master are a natural accompaniment to his exact understanding of subtle laws that operate in the inner cosmos of consciousness.

Bobo50:  "Nature or Nurture"; It's not either/or; it's both :)

Have you read Bruce Lipton?  "The Biology of Belief."

sorry a combination of sloppy thinking and writing. you want to stop caring about what other people will think about you.
this can be done by first identifying and then modifying the beliefs and values that cause you to feel that you need people to approve of you. is that better? :D
