Positive and negative examples of older adulthood?
« on: October 08, 2010, 09:06:06 PM »
It's true that physical, sensory, and some cognitive abilities peak in young adulthood, and that there is a gradual decline in some abilities through middle and older adulthood. However, we all know middle aged and older adults who are very fit. We also know now that crystallized intelligence grows over the lifespan, and that most older adults live independent and relatively healthy lives. The "mid-life crisis," the "empty nest syndrome," and the "menopausal maniac" are stereotypes that have little basis in reality.

Do you know middle aged and older adults who are leading healthy, active, intellectually stimulating lives, meeting the generativity and integrity stages that Erikson describes? Or do you have examples of the other extreme, of older adults who are stagnant or in despair?

My mom just entered her menopause - it is not a pretty sight!

Her dad however is 80 years old and running around like a teenager, he also rides a bike LOL
