Recommended Books on Upcoming Theories in Psychology
« on: February 20, 2012, 07:03:38 PM »
Hi all! Recently found this forum and lurked for a bit, decided to finally make an account and see if you guys can help me out. I've read a number of I guess what you would call pop psychology books with topics/theories surrounding procrastination, will power, decision making, motivation, etc.

I have found these topics/theories to be quite stimulating, but unfortunately I find the information to be a little light. It's like they mostly speak in generalities never digging deeper on such subjects.

So I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions on what I should maybe read next? I would really like to read about the best upcoming theories, research, and practical advice that's being released.

I'm a complete newb when it comes to Psychology, so please keep that in mind. I'm completely new to the field and am a bit overwhelmed with all the topics which is why I made this post.
Thanks for the help in advance!

it would be helpful  to know what you are interested in and for what reason?

Yea... I don't really know what the fields are exactly.... :(

I do have interests in the idea of reinventing ones life by incorporating such topics like procrastination, will power, decision making, motivation, creativity, why is Facebook addictive, etc.

I would like to find new reads on other ideas that are kind of similar to those topics....

Again sorry, like I said before I don't really know the specific fields in psychology so I lack the lexicon to express what I'm exactly looking for...

Toss me some good reads! I wont bite! Any help would be great!

how do you go about finding your current reads? where do you find things to read? library, bookshops, amazon. how have you been choosing your books?

are you wanting to read academic articles? research publications, journals etc, if so are you in college or university or work for an organisation that has access to Athens?

Well lately I've been reading what i guess you would call pop psychology books. Everything I buy comes through Amazon, off the top of my head some books I've read...

Predictably Irrational - Dan Ariely
Willpower - Ron Baumeister
You are not so Smart - David McRaney
THINKING, FAST AND SLOW - Daniel Kahnmane
Monoculture
Tribes
The Secret Life Of Pronouns - James Pennebaker
The Selfish Gene - Richard Dawkins
Drive - Daniel Pink

I guess you could say my interests fall into two categories. The first being the group of books above that all sort of relate to procrastination, will power, decision making, motivation, etc.

The second seems to be more chemical, I enjoy about reading about hormones and chemical reactions in human beings and how exactly they can be triggered/activated.

Some stuff I found that I enjoy reading about.... Guess I cant post external links just replace DOT with .

Not in school, just enjoy learning new things. I wouldn't mind checking out publications, journals and articles. I just have no idea on the web where people even post stuff like that lol. Just looking for more interesting reads is all. Don't know what Athens is, sorry.

Thanks for sticking with me!

your best option then would be to visit a library and browse the books that are on the shelves in the subject areas that your interested in. the topics on motivation, procrstination etc, that you are interested would probable be classed as self help. general psychology, neuropsychology and cognitive psychology would cover the other topics, ie chemicals and bio-psychological interactions. these would be found in more academic text books.
a
journals and research publications are all behind paywalls, ie you have to pay to access,  places like http://www.apa.org/pubs/journals/  http://www.bps.org.uk/publications/journals and springer.com the BPS.org.uk have some free articles that can be read online.

athens is a gateway to all the journal databases. you usually get access to athens in university or through a large organisations that require access to current research.

google scholar is  a good place to find free access articles. not all free and you will find some abstracts but you will find more free academic articles on scholar.

This book isn't really classified as a book about psychology, but you won't find a book filled with more juicy information than this one... "When the body says no" Author: Gabor Maté
