Recurring beard-related dream
« on: February 07, 2011, 08:53:46 PM »
Basically I've had a very similar dream a few times and I wonder if anyone had any thoughts to do with interpreting it.

In the dream, I go to look in the bathroom mirror in the morning and am surprised to see that overnight I have grown quite a lot of facial hair, and am pleased about it as it makes me feel quite grown up and manly. This morning I had the dream just before waking up and I remember thinking "wow this is awesome - all the other times this has happened it has been a dream but now I really do have quite a lot of beard" and then reaching to touch my face, then waking up.

I am 17, male with a bit of facial hair but nowhere near enough to grow a full beard, not that I particularly want to; a bit of stubble would be nice though. I've had this dream 3 or 4 times in the last few months. Its quite a nice dream, so I'm not complaining; I'm just a bit curious about what it might mean.

The beard part, in my opinion, is unspectacular; all subconscious derivative.  What is interesting is that you remembered that you dreamed of this before, even while yet in a subsequent dream.  Continuation of this could lead to the phenomenon known as lucid dreaming.  That memory that you dreamed it before could become a "trigger event" to instigate arousal of the consciousness while still in the dream state.  Pretty interesting stuff if you are interested in such self-guided exploration into the substance of your own psyche.

Here are some relevant links:

I would say your dream is about maturing. It's symbolic of becoming a man. You are 17 and say that, so age may mean something to you. Your beard in your dream makes you feel 'grown up and manly'...
You like the dream and the beard represents change, a obvious metaphore from boy to man and because you like the dream, you are ready for that change. It doesn't scare you (if it did I would say you are fearing a change that is inevitable).. I think you're just ready for a more mature you and are getting ready to embrace it.

Interesting.
This could be related to hormones and the unconscious desire for full male reproductive adulthood.

I remember as a youngster having dreams about being pregnant. They were not disturbing dreams. They occured around the ages of 10/11. I would connect them with hormonal changes. I was never personally much interested in having children at that age, or dreaming of a future with them as some girls do. I think your beard dream may be something like what I experienced.
