Transpersonal Psychology and ITP
« on: July 07, 2011, 10:20:32 PM »
So I'm looking into graduate school, and a few months ago I stumbled upon a school called the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology. They mailed me some information, and the curriculum they describe is fascinating. They have mandatory meditation, incorporate spiritual teachings while covering the fundamentals, and even require students to participate in Aikido - which I briefly practiced in high school and thoroughly enjoyed. Their website is here: http://www.itp.edu/index.php

The only problems are that it is expensive (~ $30,000 a year) and is on the other side of the country for me (the university is outside of San Francisco -- I am in Louisville, KY). I'm willing to make sacrifices to get a good education, so these things aren't the problem in and of themselves; the problem is that when I look for reviews of ITP... I just don't find much of anything. I can't make a decision like that on such limited information. I've also heard very mixed things about transpersonal psychology as a field of study (i.e. it is near impossible to get funding, it is not based on empirical evidence, it's "trendy," etc.) and that it's pretty much limited to the Bay area. They are certified for Psy. D in Clinical Psychology by the APA, and graduates from the school certainly get jobs in California, but I'm not sure how I would be perceived back here towards the east coast.

So, I have two questions:
1) Has anyone here had any experiences with ITP, first-hand or otherwise? What are your impressions? If I get a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from here, will finding a job be a problem on the east coast?

2) What do you think of Transpersonal Psychology as a field? I am someone who tends to lean towards the empirical side of psychology, but I think subjective, spiritual experiences can be just as important.
