We're familar with "engaging empathy" with a person or movie. We don't recognize doing it with some of our own thoughts. Even though we don't recognize doing it with thoughts, we 'do' experience the effects. We don't initially recognize believing some of our false thoughts as if true, real. 'Thoughts' infused/permeated with consciousness are a second source of perceptions.
False thoughts are not relevant to facts. Reacting to false (believed) thoughts is a 'detour' from facts; chasing red herring.
Fishermen will throw back fish that don't 'measure up'. There's no shortage of thoughts (as long as your thinking capacity is in order) so why not dismiss those that 'don't measure up'?
Some therapy methodology manipulate thought or recondition beliefs. They 'salvage' all they can. They operate as a ' thrift shop'; refurbished goods.  They do 'good work' , there might be a 'better way'.
Specific thoughts can be viewed as symptoms of a cause.
