What constitutes commom sense logic and rational reasoning?
« on: November 19, 2011, 09:35:00 PM »
Are these three attributes sense logic and reason logical? Much less the word common? Reguardless of societies input they come from other understandings. Then we define what we think these words mean and then there's the word believe. In trying to understand others one must understand others from some perspective and point of view. But one can lose ones perspective by observation and start questioning ones own beliefs.
Common might mean exponential from many to one. Logic might mean the as sense. Each word seems justifiable in it's own understanding. Relatedness even comes to mind. Speaking of mind is there a universal mind or minds and we are it? In startrek the Borg had a collective mind as one. Yet we are a collective of many. Where's the order in that? thoughts please. pljames

pljames: "What constitutes common sense....?" You looking for absolute definition? There ain't no such thing. Definitions are made by people, not by the universe.
Common sense is what is believed by one or many. Your wife hoards because she believes there's value in doing so. Everyones behavior is consistent with what they believe; it's the beliefs that are questionable. I been trying to arouse interest in understanding 'believing; but so far most people continue to take 'believing' for granted.

We believe by observation and trust of facts plus experience.. Does one believe by there mind or heart. The heart seems to be the lesser evil. Everything in life has a cost. Are we willing to pay the price? Even our belief. pljames

a quick comment on what constitutes rational reasoning in relation to thoughts and beliefs.

in terms of beliefs there are 3 criteria one should endeavour to meet when holding a belief the more of these criteria the more rational is the belief.

criteria are:
1. is the belief or thought logical. does it hold up to standard logical scrutiny.
2. is the belief or thought empirical. is there factual / objective evidence.
3. is the belief or thought practical.  does it help me to function effectively.
The so-called miraculous powers of a great master are a natural accompaniment to his exact understanding of subtle laws that operate in the inner cosmos of consciousness.

This is why I love this sight.

We are all part of everything else. The same material that has been here from the begining of time is still here making up the stuff that is all around us. The water we drink is the same water people millennia ago drank. Our thoughts and actions effect everyone else and everything else to a degree. What we believe makes up our whole nature. It controls our destiny.
Time is all we really have.

We do not own the earth. We are borrowing it from our children.

Is that what you really think?

How many ignorant people does it take to destroy a planet?

Live & Let Live

pljames: You wrote;"We believe by observation and trust of facts plus experience."  For laymen that's still only a ideal. Scientists 'are' practicing that.
One can hear a noise at two AM from the kitchen and interpret  the noise as being made by a burglar, and react with fear to ones own image of a burglar.
The burglar image is not based on observation but from memory. The misinterpretation is reacted to fearfully, the fear was needless in that context.
Why was the 3 criteria not used, when needed, and avoid/prevent the needless fear?
