What is the name of this study?
« on: February 01, 2009, 04:55:11 AM »
I saw a special on TV a year or so ago about how humans react in certain situations. I can't remember the name but I remember some segments from it so hopefully someone can help me. The special mentioned a study where people were told to turn a knob to increase the pain of someone they could not see and continue no matter how much the person begged. No one was actually harmed, and the person screaming was actually a tape recording. The study monitored how many people continued to turn the knob after the person started screaming. In another study, a person was put in a room alone and smoke started to come under the door. The person ran for help but when put in a room with someone else in the same situation they waited to see if the other person would go get help. Finally, the last segment I remember was about a woman that was murdered in front of her apartment building while her neighbors looked out of the window and watched. None of them reacted or called the police because they did not feel like it was there responsibility. I know this is a lot but if anyone knows the name of this documentary, the name of the studies, or any similar programs I would greatly appreciate it.

That would be the Milgram experiment.  The murder would be the Kitty Genovese murder.

Thanks for the names. So who knows the name of the documentary that includes the previous experiments plus the McDonald's stripsearch incident ( ) and the Stanford prison experiment?

Could it be The Human Behavior Experiments?
