ADHD and techno?
« on: February 04, 2009, 03:56:55 AM »
Okay, so i have ADHD and my doctor recently took me off of my medicine which has been hell. She wants me to try to help myself, which is REALLY hard...sorry that was off topic.

I know that the medicines that they give us are stimulants and they over-stimulate the brain and this somehow
makes us calmer and they make it easier to function. So I tried listening to techno because for some reason it struck my as a sort of musical stimulant. It's weird because it helps me to not feel so hyper when I listen to techno, it seems to be like a temporary fix for my being so hyper.
I think it's really weird and I was just wondering if anyone else has found any things that help their ADHD or someone they know who has it.

hi,
i am moving this topic to the mental health forum. i think it is a mental health topic.

i dont know much about Attention Disorders. i heard a talk that Attention disorders where due to the types of childrens programmes and computer games that people used, the talk was saying that due to the content of the media changing so quickly the observer became neurologically excited and stimulated by this type of content. as the brain developed the mind of the subject needed this constant changing activity and becomes unable to focus on one task. it seemed to make sense to me. i dont know how this can help you if at all, or what you might do to reverse this process. i imagine something like yoga which is an activity based meditation might help to slow down and focus the mind in the body.
The so-called miraculous powers of a great master are a natural accompaniment to his exact understanding of subtle laws that operate in the inner cosmos of consciousness.

The main music I listen to is electronic / techno.  I've been a Depeche Mode fan for over 20 years.  As I get older, I've opened up to some other types of music, but especially in my late teens, I was more of a Goth kid.

Rickson (2009) found that music therapy was somewhat effective in ADHD. This study tested 13 years old using classroom behavior as the primary measure. It suggests you might be on the right track with your techno music :-)

My boyfriend has issues focusing and his favorite type of music is that as well. Even I (and I don't actually have ADHD) can listen to techno/trance/electronic music and feel more focused. It's something about the rhythm and the beat and the length of the tracks. If it works, stick with it!
