Helen, it is never too late to help anyone. Especially if they have lost someone in their family. If they confided in you, then they need your emotional support. You don't need to think about what to say or do, just sitting with them would be enough.

There is however something you shouldn't do - don't say fake nonsense like "i know what you feel", even if you have gone through a similar situation, the person you say this to are currently going through grief and they will feel like you're just saying that and that you don't really care.

If you could give some more information, like how close you were to your friend, why you think your friend committed suicide and how the family is reacting - are they depressed, angry, self-blaming, blaming someone else etc. I'll be able to help you more with that information.

Take care
