I cant figure out what emotion i'm feeling?
« on: February 23, 2011, 02:55:37 AM »
I recently got my dosage increased on a medication (risperdol) i'm taking. Since then ive had symptoms but i cant put my finger on what they are. I cant figure out if they are depression, anger, anxiety, frustration or what. Any advice?

Perhaps you could write down, for a couple of days, what you're feeling, when? Perhaps if you see it together, you will be able to realize what it is you're feeling. If not, you could share it with us, if you want :)

I think one thing is i dont care about my appearance. Is that depression?

Can you describe the way a person would act if their emotions were numb? If they had no passions?

Merely not caring about your appearance doesn't necessarily have to be a depression. You can read a description what is depression and what causes it here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001941

How a person would act when they feel entirely numb generally depends on the person (not everyone is the same). But generally, they don't want to do anything, don't want to go out, don't want to play a game, don't want to talk, at times don't even want to get out of bed.
Also, nothing can spark their interest.

The increased dosage could be attributing to the emotion you cannot name due to the effects on your nervous system. Is there some restless anxiety for no reason that you're experiencing?

You said that you don't care about your appearance. Does the medication make you very tired? If so, do you see 'dressing smartly/neatly' as something like a chore because you may be fatigued?

A depressed person may not dress well and some may not care much about hygiene when in depression. This I think is due to the way that so much is internalised that the 'exterior' an individual can be neglected (by that person). The sad feelings have taken the upper hand, even overwhelming, so taking care of the exterior appearance can be neglected.

Acoustic has a valid point. Your question is - what is this emotion? that's internal. Had your question been 'How can I look good'. That would have been external.

You are more concerned with your emotional state than your physical state. Is this your medication? I wouldn't know, but I would think it's a habbit of thought processes. Everytime you think of an emotion, or sadness or numbness etc try to balance it with a thought about hairstyles, social interactions, a place etc.. hope you understand. By training your thoughts to be more balanced you should benefit from a better perspective.

It is possible that the Risperdol has left with you with some negative symptoms, this is common with anti-psychotic medication. Ask your psychiatrist for more information about your medication. ask about positive and negative symptoms and ask if there is any advice they can give you to help you manage these symptoms.

The so-called miraculous powers of a great master are a natural accompaniment to his exact understanding of subtle laws that operate in the inner cosmos of consciousness.
