I have to ask
« on: June 02, 2009, 08:54:41 PM »
A friend of mine appears normal most ofthe time but she gets these delusions this guy 12 yrs younger than her is going to sweep her off her feet and marry her. He is just a bartender at a local watering hole and he looks like a GQ model. She thinks he breaks into he rplace and rearranges the furniture and I asked her when I was leaving town in Nov, what her thanksgiving plans were. She said she was going over to his place. I get back in town the sat after thanksgiving and she said the guy forgot to call her.   Is this schizophrenia?

no. just having unusual, strange, odd, illogical or irrational beliefs is not schizophrenia and not psychotic. if it where half of the population would be classed mentally ill.

the irrational, illogical beliefs may be a feature of psychosis sometimes but they do not have to present for a psychotic diagnosis. and being diagnosed with a psychotic illness might not have unusual, irraitonal, illogical belieifs.

The part about the furniture seems like it might be paranoia although you didn't give much detail. Here's a useful definition for "paranoid personality disorder". Note the distinction between the personality disorder and schizophrenia.

Paranoid Personality Disorder is a condition characterized by excessive distrust and suspiciousness of others. This disorder is only diagnosed when these behaviors become persistent and very disabling or distressing. This disorder should not be diagnosed if the distrust and suspiciousness occurs exclusively during the course of Schizophrenia, a Mood Disorder With Psychotic Features, or another Psychotic Disorder or if it is due to the direct physiological effects of a neurological (e.g., temporal lobe epilepsy) or other general medical condition.

Hope that helps. There's more at http://www.mentalhealth.com/dis/p20-pe01.html

Thanks, here is some more info:   She said the bartender came in once and left a "present" on her pillow.  Also, she has accused at least 2 people of stalking her.

Perhaps nothing more than her trying to elevate her status? Is she objectively attractive? It reminds me of a man who would say he would constantly decline offers from underage girls; this man was not a supermodel.

Does she do it front of him? If so, what is his response? And then, what is her response to that?

NO, she just talks to him at the bar and afterwards tells me things that she makes up. One day we went there for a total of one hour and neither of us left the bar stools. He came over and told us about his son's (single father) football game and that was that. The next day she said he said this and that and I said no he did not. She said I must have dreamt it.
