Mental health counseling
« on: August 24, 2011, 07:18:10 PM »
I think I now understand why I have been in for counseling so many times. I did'nt understand the stress I had or did'nt want to deal with it at that time. Fear of the unknown controlled me. Prescription drugs have there time for helping one to deal with the immediate problem, but in time they lose there (potentcy?). Counseling has it's merits but to a point. Ones understanding of there immediate problem is essential and the why they do not want to deal with it. I now see that. Thoughts p[lease. pljames

Understanding the problem or understanding ones dealing with the problem?  The former is easy.  The latter requires effective communication and precious time.

Counselling is inadequate because it needs to be more rigorous and probing and the rationed consultation time does not allow for this.

Mental Health classes might, in future, achieve the status of language learning classes,  for example, and those who participate on theses classes might be more useful to their friends.  I don't think so-called therapists have/should have the monopoly on helping people because of the limitations I've mentioned.

I have just read your May post.  Why should there be compassion in "treatment"?

Counseling is very powerful and cognitive behavior therapy is evidence based. Please give a try and see the difference. If you don't feel the energy to go out and meet a therapist or if you feel uncomfortable to see a therapist face to face you could choose to take online counseling. All the best :)

I am leaning toward on-line counseling. The therapist wants me to deal with the problem giving me the thought that for whatever reason I do not want or need the counseling. It stands to reason I want the problem (whether I accept or deny it or not) to go away or to fix itself. I question my thoughts on the above statement. What is the right approach to self analysis with on-line counseling? pljames

How can the therapist understand your problem if they have not experienced it them self? This is my argument toward relative therapy for the patient. pljames

Is it possible for the patient to have a counselor that has experienced the same problem as the patient? I call this relative counseling. Knowledge of the patients problem is one understanding but with the experience of the counselor their is another understanding. Thoughts please? pljames

If the patient/client didn,t want to "deal with the problem" could the psychologist find a alternet route related to the "problem" but not directlly involving the client? A another way with dealing with it  through another person even e-mail perhaps? pljames

a skilled therapist will recognize the clients resistance to "dealing with the problem" and work with it. the resistance is itself a form of anxiety about the uncertainty of changing.

unfortunately not all therapists are good therapists.
The so-called miraculous powers of a great master are a natural accompaniment to his exact understanding of subtle laws that operate in the inner cosmos of consciousness.
