Psychiatry OR Clinical Psychology???
« on: January 24, 2012, 10:11:05 PM »
Lately I've been doing a lot of thinking about my future school decisions. Currently, I am in my 2nd year of a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. When I graduate from my undergraduate, I want to apply to a Graduate School, McGill University in Montreal, Canada, for example. However, I'm having an issue: I love the diagnosis and mental health disorders aspect of Psychology and my highest grade is in "Abnormal Behaviour", but my strength does not lie in sciences(Bio, chem, physics). I was looking into Psychiatry but you have to go to Med school for that, thus you are required sciences (I believe?). The other thing that freaks me out about Psychiatry is that it's 12 years of post-secondary school, or can I take just a Master's in Psychiatry? I have always had a time line for myself, and the idea of finally graduating when I'm 30 freaks me out!!! Clinical Psychology on the other hand, also deals with diagnosis and disorders, but is more focussed on research and not on medicine, and I am able to take only a Master's. (I may want to take a Psy.D eventually, but at this point in my life it all seems overwhelming.) What to do?!

Aagh, you just need a little motativation from what I've read. =)
The fact that you're actually setting goals for yourself and doing what you're doing; you're doing great! =) you have plenty of options.  Don't limit yourself from just getting only one thing.  Do as much as you possibly can.  I, in the other hand, my first career move was not so great on the count of the economy going bankrupt, so now I have to start all over again.  Although, I had great working experiences in my culinary career, I want to start over again by majoring in psychology, too, and make it all the way to my bachelors.  If that goes well, I wanna get my master's and after that my PhD and specialize in forenzic pyschology =).  My goal of graduating before I'm 30 was already fulfilled, now it's time for another goal.  That goal is getting a completely new career before I'm too old to get one.  Being that I'm 26, I have many years ahead of me to go back to school and become a student again.  I just started and I know it will take me about 15 years until I have what I want for a career; and that's working with the police.  It will take me about 7 years to gain my master's and about more than 12 years to have gain my PhD.  I have a long way to go and worst of all, I have almost no support from my own family, which sucks, so I literality have to start over and go through this for another 12 years of my life, alone and no one to support me, other than my friends which I am thankful for.
Like I said Suzanna, do not limit yourself from doing just one thing.  If you got what you wanted from your career, don't feel like you can just stop there.  If you have time for more class courses, then do them.  You can still spend time with your family and you can still take care of your kids and there's gonna be plenty of time for sleep.  A master's is a fine idea, but if you have a chance to get your PhD and specialize in something, then you should go for it.  Hey, maybe one day, who knows, you and I might be working together one day.  This is a small world after all. lol just a thought, cuz I was joked into thinking that all psychologist knows each other and have a annual banquet or something lol.
I think you should specialize in something that makes you most happy.  Write down the things that you most enjoy about psychology and the most fun you have doing it.  And just take it and hold on to it.  If Psychiatry is something you enjoy, then you should go for it.  I mean, just because your highest grades are in Abnormal Behaviour, yes, it's a fun subject, doesn't mean you enjoy that the most.  My highest grades in a subject would be Math, but I freakin' hate math.  It means nothing. lol  No one is saying that it's gonna be easy either way, if you decide to take one or the other because you know it's not gonna be easy; because if it was easy, then everyone would be doing it.  And for those people that knows it's gonna be difficult, doesn't want to put an effort and just say "Oh, no, it's too hard."  or "Oh, no, I'm just gonna be waisting my time, when I can just work at a restaurant and work up to management and make the some amount of money as a doctor."  Truth is, doctors; specially psychologist, can make over 100K a year, while restaurant managers and owner can make about 80K to 100K, if successful, but having to ruin their backs while doing it and it's more stress.
If you put your mind to it, you can do ANYTHING.  Trust me, you're in the right path.  You've got a great future ahead of you.  Keep making right choices and you'll be fine. =)

I agree if you want to be happy in a career? Make sure it is something you enjoy doing.   ;D

Is that what you really think?

This is great! Thanks for your response. I think I will take everything step by step. My first goal is to graduate undergraduate ofcourse. I have plans to do a semester abroad in spain next winter, this might backtrack my psychology program in my home country but I think the experience is worth it. I have lots of travel plans, and plan to take a year off after my undergraduate before I apply to a grad school. I think Psychiatry may be focussed heavily on sciences, which might not work out for me as it is not my strength. I have to try not to be so concerned with my future (getting married in time, having children etc.) but rather focus on what makes me happy and accomplish things one by one, slowly.
