hi, i have split this post and made it a topic. i think this is a request that deserves a thread of its own.

i have looked into courses about eating disorders for my partner, i did not get very far, with online courses as we both felt that a course from a university or college that was accredited would be more beneficial in the long run, and we could not find any courses online that were run by an approved college or university. i would definitely like to hear from anybody else if they know of good courses for eating disorders.

i had a look at the above course, i find it so difficult to make a judgement about these courses form the information they give on the website. at one time i was very interested in studying cognitive therapy online. i had seen a diploma course online for around £250. a diploma at a university would cost around £2000 and the post graduate diploma would cost around £3500. so £250 was very reasonable. i contacted the online college regarding this course to find out how they ran the course, how it was taught and what the syllabus contained.

they sent back a decent amount of information with examples of the tutorials and a full list of the contents of the syllabus.

this all looked really good but i was uncertain still, if this was so good how come it was so cheap, in comparison to college and university courses?

i made further enquiries and dicovered this was to do with how the courses are accredited. if you want to work in a health care profession. then you will probably have to be registered with a regulating body, such as bacp, bps, ukcp, babcp etc these regulating bodies place strict criteria for courses seeking accreditation.

it is important to think about what you want from such a course. if you want a career from this line of study this is probably not the kind of course you should go for. if you are wanting to study eating disorders for a professional or vocational reason then go for a university or college course that is accredited by the regulating body of the profession that you are interested in.

if you are already in a health and social care role and you are already registered, then a course like this will be an addition to your cv. also if you are interested in the area for personal reasons and you are studying for your own interst then this is a very reasonable way to learn. then again, what is wrong with a library and some self directed sudy?

i found the website for the CBT course, it is definitely the same college only the price is £499 for the course.
now, i dont know if it was me with my dodgy selective memory or maybe they put the price up as the college has grown.

here is the link to the cbt course. http://www.collegeofcounselling.com/counselling-courses/1-year-diploma-in-counselling/diploma-in-cognitive-behavioural-therapy

there are some other interesting courses available. one thing to remember about these courses, they will not gain you eligibility for professional registration. you could practice as a counselor but you may find difficulty getting insurance and you will not be able to register with a legitimate regulating body.

these colleges get around this by getting accreditation from other agencies who are also not valued in their professions. if you wanted to work within NHS as a counselor you would need to have completed a course accredited by BACP or UKCP and have your own or be working towards registration with the same regulating body.

having a course accredited by JBCP (Joe Blogs College of Psychotherapy) is worthless for professional development.

for a list of BACP accredited  counselling courses see
see http://bacp.co.uk/accreditation/Accredited%20Course%20Search/index.php

for babcp accredited CBT courses see

for ukcp accredited psychotherapy courses see       (only two courses at present)

i was quite impressed with your eating disorder course. i like the fact that you can learn without paying and then if you want the certificate you just pay for that. i thought that was really good. i may take the test myself.

Thanks for all the links ,they are great if you live in the UK and are able to attend courses. I haven't find any course online ,though.
I don't necessary need an accredited institution to take courses in English as I don't intend to practice in UK ,just to add them on my cv. I took accredited studies in my country .

That's interesting . Is this possible in UK for someone to take unaccredited studies and be allowed to be a counselor ? :o

as things stand no body can allow you or disallow you from being a counsellor.

you dont need any qualifications to be a counsellor. you dont need any certificate or registration. nothing.

you can put an advert in the paper or on a website saying "i am a counsellor, i charge £20 a session, call me on blah blah blah"

you can rent an office put a sign outside saying "counselling service" and invite people in.

you can do all this without any qualification. that is quite scary i think.

fortunately the law is changing this year. in order to practice as a counsellor from 2008 you will need to be qualified to a minimum of a level 4 diploma.

this does not change the fact that many organisations including the NHS would not consider anybody with out accreditation or working toward accreditation with the bacp or ukcp
