Ribot, Affective Memory and Acting
« on: February 01, 2012, 01:32:20 PM »
Hello,
I am a student of film studies. While researching the work of Stanislavski, the great actor and acting teacher, I came across a part where he mentions Theodule Ribot, and his theory of Affective memory. It greatly influenced Stanislavski's concept of Emotional memory.
I have found very little information about Ribot, so my question is - how does the academic community look upon his work now? Is Affective memory still used as a term, or is it outdated? Are there any similar contemporary theories?
Thank you very much.

I had not heard of affective memory so i googled it. from what i have read this is nothing to do with psychology or neuroscience. affective memory is a form of method acting which relies on personal experiences to guide actors with their roles.
The so-called miraculous powers of a great master are a natural accompaniment to his exact understanding of subtle laws that operate in the inner cosmos of consciousness.

Yes, that is why I'm posting my question here: I can't find anything by googling. In Stanislavski's book An Actor Prepares, he introduces the concept of emotional memory. Which, he says, was inspired by the French experimental psychologist Theodule Ribot, and his "Affective memory".
It is now a widely used term in acting, and one of it's basic tenets. You're right. But my question is about the origins and similar current concepts in psychology.
Cheers
