The Century of the Self by Adam Curtis

Without straying into the territory of foaming conspiracy-theory, Curtis talks us through the psychology of contemporary capitalism, and the ways in which advertising and politics work together to suppress dissent.

The Power of Nightmares and The Trap are also fantastic. All of Curtis' works, as well as his brilliant blog, are available for free online.

I thought I'd previously posted links to this documentary and on checking I have, several times.

This knowledge is something I promote. This is what makes people value material goods above virtues. These people I consider to be living in a sort of matrix world. They buy £50 bubble bath believing they can 'step out of this world' forgetting it is a concoction of chemicals but instead believe it a luxury, that they are paying for to be poisoned, by immersing themselves in it?

I believe everyone should have this knowledge, but wonder if that would make them any less superficial?

well here they are all neat and tidy in one thread.

I am more interested in how can this kind of information be used for positive social ends.

not in stopping people from buying goods but in changing the values of social structures.

And how do you propose such information could be used for positive social ends?

Has this information changed your attitude or values or social perceptions etc.. in anyway?

i dont have any proposals of how to use this information for positive social ends. i am just interested in how it might be used.

everything we experience changes us in some way and there is new content and information that i have not seen before watching this documentary but my atitude and values have not changed from watching this.
