The "spirit" is the interpretation of the logic side of human trying to understand and come to terms with it's emotional side. Religion is a tool, used in different forms.

Actually I believe humans are made up of three parts.

The physical body. Which is a temporary container to hold the other two.

The Soul. Which is the part that exists forever and has existed forever. This part allows us to commun or interact with a higher power. Using prayer or meditation.

The Spirit. Which is where our conscience exists. Some people have suppressed their conscience and to an extent their emotions, but it doesn't mean that they don't have them. This is where we determine right from wrong. How we regulate our day to day interactions with other people and our environment. Are center of sensory input and beliefs.

Okay, where did that come from? It captures the essence of our situation pretty accurately.
Only by putting off the self can we truly find the self.
tao te ching.

it is worth a look. It is a small book. Probably less than 100 pages.

I have read about a third and find so many of these philosophies I already adhere to. I also remember people recommending this to me even telling me about it or asking me if I got something I said from the Tao? Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?  ;)
