Sexaulity and Language
« on: August 22, 2009, 05:39:02 PM »
I'm beginning a small study on sexuality and language soon. I'm a future sex therapist and love studying sexulity

I wanted to share what I got thus far and offer up a chance to talk about this topic.

quick notes/facts:
1- english is the only language where curse words and sexual terms are interchangable

2- we are of the few cultures where references to sexual acts are used as insults

3- we also use body parts and gender specific terms as insults

4- we typically phrase a female's sexuality in passive terms ; a male's in active terms

5- we often refer to sexuality by the dictomy of one pasive partner and one active/dominant partner

6-a study found that little girls, as young as 8, used the phrase 'suck my dick' during fights. how will she ever participate in oral sex with a male in a healthy manner after associating the act with debasement?

some good points you make here. i dont have much experience of sex therapy, i have worked with people with marriage problems and psychosexual dyfunction but not as in depth as a sex therapy.

but i am intersted in language and how the language we use reflects our subjective experience.

do you think there are other uses for the idea of language and sexuality.

such as identifying if a person is promiscous, open minded or prudish based on the language they use.

ie somebody that uses sexual swear words being more promiscuous or something like this?

it is eay to idenitify if somebody is an optimist or pessimist by the way they phrase a question.

i wonder if there is some relation to people choice of language and their sexuality.
And the  LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as  one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
