the dumbing down of men and fathers
« on: August 11, 2008, 05:25:07 PM »
The post on boys made me think about how men and fathers are now treated in our society (especially in America).

Are you familiar with the Berenstain Bears series of books for kids?  I grew up reading them and have passed all my old copies on to my kids.  But I now notice how Papa Bear is portrayed as a bumbling idiot in these books.  It's Mama Bear who always comes to the rescue and corrects the problems Papa has helped to create.  Papa is often shown to be "just one of the kids" full of bad manners and simple thinking.

I think we all need to be careful what kind of message about men we are giving our children/

I must say I haven't read those books  ,but I don't agree that children may have wrong messages about man role only from books . where is the role of their fathers or grandfathers or uncles or big brothers or male teachers in their education then?
If a child has a responsible father or any other important  male figure in his childhood ,he will got the right message no matter how many books he read about Papa Bear- a bumbling idiot .
I would rather wonder about the fact that those books may reflect or not the reality of our century.
