How do you know what is the right profession for you
« on: July 14, 2011, 06:42:08 AM »
I used to work as a teacher. This was ok, I was happy for a while, since I got to practice what I learned in school. But after sometime, I realized that it was not the profession for me. I would like to be more creative and more free. So I took time off to think what I want to do in my life. Now, I am happier.

Are you currently in the right profession? How do you find the right profession for you?

A lot of different factors come into play when selecting a profession. Pressure from relatives or friends. Financial responsibilities. Demand in the society. Personel preferences. Personal abilities ( are you able to do a specific job?) I am sure there are more, but you get the idea.

I was haveing a discussion about this with my Nephews. At different times. One of them was convinced he was going to be a professional baseball player. The other wanted to be an actor. I set down with each of them and discussed rationally the possibility of each of their desires. I had my nephew who wanted to be a baseball player tell me about the professional players he admired. I asked about where they learned to play and how much work they put into it. Also how big they were. I asked him two questions.
1 Are you willing to put that much work into being a ball player? 2 Are there any professional players your size. He answered no to both questions. He joined the Army. I didn't want to squash his dream, but I knew he didn't have what it took to be a professional.

My other Nephew thought he would just walk in to an audition and become the next Brad Pit. I thought he was kidding. So I asked him how much experience acting he had? He had done two plays in High School. I explained that no actors just walk on to an audition and do a cold read and get the part everytime. They struggle and go to audition after audition hoping to get a part. Meanwhile they work other jobs to support themselves. Or they have someone willing to support them. I told him if he wanted to be an actor? To take acting classes. Also to go to the mirror and take a honest look at himself. What he really looked like. That was the roles he should audition for. I pointed out he was not Brad Pit and probably would never be accepted in kind of roles he does. Unless it was a comedy he probably wouldn't get the lead. Because he has average looks. He is not bad looking, but he is not strickingly handsome either. He thought about what I said and is taking acting classes at college, but majoring in computer science. He already has offers by companies that design video games.

The world is changeing so fast today. Knowing what occupation to choose is difficult. Something you enjoy I would think. Also haveing more than one profession can be a really good thing.  Peace!

How do you know there's one right profession? Something like half of people today have jobs that didn't even exist a decade and a half ago.

This one is hard to answer.
What happens if you are good in both science and the humanities.

For some it is easy, they have a clear idea of what the can't do and no desire to learn.

I would think doing what you enjoy or are good at, would be the place to start.

I don not believe that taking up a career exam nor anyone can tell what's the best profession for you. I  mean you could feel it, and probably have the talent on it. It's in you, your self will tell if it's the right one.
