MA or MS?
« on: April 01, 2011, 02:20:21 PM »
What are the differences, pros and cons to the MA in counseling psych and MS in clinical psych? Can one become a therapist or counselor with the MS, or would the MA be the only way to enable him/her to practice?

which country and state do you live in/ wish to practice in?

I live in FL, but I might be moving to CA by the end of the year. I wish to be a therapist/counselor who works with clients in a office setting on a regular basis. I would like to incorporate transpersonal modalities with my practice. I just don't understand the differences between the MS and MA, according to several websites I can acquire either the MS or the MA and still end up with the same results, being a therapist/counselor. So why would someone get one over the other?

you should check what you need to get yourself licenced in the state you wish to practice.

generally the MS will focus on science and research an MA will focus on theory and practice.

you should be eligible to practice professionally with either but I dont know the licensing requirements of the states you wish to practice so you should check that out for yourself to be sure.
