Psychologist Mentors for Psychology Undergraduates
« on: June 03, 2011, 09:24:15 PM »
Does anyone know of a program (or a category here even) where Psychology Undergraduates can receive some mentorship from Experts in the field?

Im beginning my first year as an undergraduate psychology student. I understand its a whole different world than the AS degree in Business. I do remember when I had difficulty in math, I sat with the smart people in the math class. If Im going to be my best in school and psychology in general, I need to sit with mentors in the field.

Im grateful I found this forum. This will do for the time being, but if you have any info regarding the above query - Im all ears.

I dont understand why somebody would ask on forum for a mentor. Maybe that is a US thing and me being English if we have mentor it would be provided by a university, college or placement.

I dont get what a mentor would do on a forum or what they would want to be a mentor for.

Can anyone explain, is it just me and my English ways?

When I read the original post, I don't think s/he's looking for an online mentor. I think s/he's asking online where s/he can find a mentor. At least, that's what I thought when I bumped it.

The university would be the obvious choice, but perhaps there's somewhere else an undergrad could go for advice and counseling. I know many schools would have a Psychology Club, and I plan on joining when I go to my new university. But I would also be curious about any other resources.

online: for help with specific questions, probably forums are the best way. other places online would be the like of google groups and news servers/ list serves.

offline: schools, colleges and universities will be the obvious frist place. if there is a pulication that produces print media for a relavent field you might find groups and programs in the classified sections of such publications.

if you are studying a program that has a clinical practice element you might need to have a supervisor, if supervisson was sought privately you would certainly have to pay. unless you find a supervisor in training who was willing to offer free supervisison to obtain their required hours. finding a supervisor will be different from country to country and state to state.

apart form that, i dont know, it is not something i have had to do.
