Purpose of a study on video games and dreams?

I'm definitely not a psychologist, I'm researching for a novel that I'm writing.  I've honestly haven't taken more than just Intro to Psychology.

If there was a study done on kids where they were to partake in a video / virtual reality game test that was based upon and created of their biggest dreams and nightmares, what would be the purpose of such a study (variables, or whatnot?)
